There are fat bears. After which there are bears that get so fats, they have trouble walking.
The apty-named 747 is certainly one of these bears. He is the most important bear many wildlife-watchers at Alaska’s Katmai Nationwide Park and Protect have ever seen. And he’s the fattest bear within the park’s 2022 Fat Bear Week contest, an annual celebration of those animals’ successes within the callous wilderness. (You can, and should, vote, by the way. Katmai crowns its official winner based mostly on votes from the general public.)
As a former park ranger at Katmai, I’ve seen 747. I’ve cowered behind a fence as he is lumbered by. However do not take it from me. Take it from a Katmai bear knowledgeable who diligently observes these bears every year, and not too long ago wrote a e book on these particular animals known as The Bears of Brooks Falls.
“Buddies, people, and ursids, allow us to stand in awe of a real competitor,” writes Mike Fitz, a former Katmai park ranger and at present a resident naturalist for explore.org, the group that livestreams the bears. “A candidate with conviction. A candidate with power. A candidate that stands up for what he believes. A candidate the dimensions of a double-wide fridge. This Fats Bear Week vote for the mighty 747.”
“747 returns to Brooks River each summer season as an enormous and simply retains getting larger,” added Fitz, who has watched 747 eat 15 large sockeye salmon (some 67,000 energy) over only a few hours. Bear 747 is a former Fats Bear Week champion.
Lately, a ranger has described 747 as being “extra hippopotamus than bear at occasions.”
The photographs under present 747’s transformation this summer season. Needless to say the “fatter” picture (on proper), exhibiting a beefed up 747, was snapped by a Katmai ranger on Sept. 6, a month in the past. He is even larger now.

In a hypercompetitive bear world — the place even the most important, most dominant bears should tussle for the most effective fishing spots — bear 747 has frequently confirmed profitable. He is a veteran bear (he is round 20, which is older for a brown bear). He is expert at catching modern, fast-moving salmon. He isn’t usually too aggressive, however apparently has simply sufficient assertiveness to command the most effective spots. And most significantly, he is enormous. That makes him one of the river’s most dominant bears. Most bears yield prime fishing territory to him.
“Though dominant bears can preserve their rank within the hierarchy by aggression, 747 usually retains his standing by sheer dimension alone,” explains explore.org. “Most bears acknowledge they can’t compete with him bodily and so they yield house upon his strategy.”
Bear 747 ate thousands of fish this summer, which interprets to many tens of millions of energy. A contemporary sockeye salmon supplies some 4,500 energy, and scientists estimate brown bears just like 747 can eat over 6,000 fish in a season. 747 has been busy.
